Here's how to wash a microfibre mop pad properly, and how to look after the rest of your Cleanmatic so it keeps working.
Caring for your mop cloth
The cloth does the work, so it is worth looking after.
- Rinse it under warm water after each use to clear grit before it dries in.
- Machine wash warm with your normal detergent, together with towels or other microfibre rather than cotton that sheds lint.
- Skip the fabric softener. It coats the fibres and stops them picking up dirt.
- No bleach, and do not wash above the temperature on the care label.
- Air dry, or tumble dry on low. High heat damages microfibre.
- Replace the cloth when it stops gripping dust or starts to feel slick rather than grabby.
Caring for the mop head and handle
- Wipe the head down after mopping and let it dry before you put it away.
- Check the swivel joint now and then, and clear out any hair or grit wound around it.
- Store the mop with the head off the floor so the cloth dries evenly and the head keeps its shape.
Caring for the bucket
- Empty and rinse it after each use. Standing water goes stale quickly.
- Leave it open to dry before collapsing it for storage.
Different floors
A damp mop rather than a wet one suits most sealed floors.
Sealed timber and laminate
Wring the cloth out well. These floors do not like water sitting at the seams.
Tile and vinyl
More water is fine. Work along the grout lines with the edge of the head.
Unsealed timber, waxed floors and natural stone
Check the floor manufacturer's advice before you mop.
Two things worth avoiding
- Leaving the cloth sitting wet in the bucket overnight.
- Mopping over loose grit. Sweep or vacuum first, or you will just drag it around.
