How to Clean Muddy Paw Prints Off Floors

Mopping a grey plank floor with a flat microfibre mop

One wet walk can put paw prints down the hallway. Here's how to clean muddy paw prints off hard floors, and how to stop most of the mud at the door.

What should you do first?

Let the mud dry. Wet mud smears. Dry mud lifts off with the mop. If you can close the door on the room for half an hour, the clean-up is much quicker.

How do you clean muddy paw prints?

  1. No need to sweep or vacuum first. A wide flat microfibre mop picks up the dried mud and grit as it goes.
  2. Wipe with a barely damp pad or cloth and a mild floor cleaner suited to your floor.
  3. Work in small sections, rinsing the pad when it gets dirty.
  4. Change the water as soon as it looks muddy.
  5. Dry the floor with a dry pad, especially on timber, laminate and hybrid.

What if the prints have dried on?

Lay a damp cloth over the mark for a minute to soften it, then wipe. Don't scrub hard on timber or laminate, and keep water off the joins between boards.

How do you stop the mud at the door?

Cleaning guides recommend a mud mat at every entrance and a dog towel kept inside the door, with the dog trained to wait for a wipe before coming in. Add to that:

  • A towel or pet wipes by the back door for paws.
  • A shallow bowl of warm water for really muddy walks. The usual advice is warm water with a mild dog shampoo, then rinsing and drying the paws properly.
  • A washable mat in the spot where your dog usually comes in.
  • Keep the muddy patch in the yard covered if there's one spot that causes most of it.

Dry the paws afterwards. Damp paws pick up more dirt on the way through the house.

What about the hallway runner?

Shake it out, and wash it if it's washable. A runner along the usual route catches a lot before it reaches the rest of the floor.

Clean it fast, then get on with your day

The Cleanmatic 8-in-1 flat mop and bucket set wrings itself through double scrapers, so a muddy pad gets rinsed and re-wrung while your hands stay on the handle. The bucket folds flat, so it's easy to keep near the back door.

Frequently asked questions

What cleaner is safe to use with dogs in the house?

Warm water with a small amount of mild, pH-neutral floor cleaner, used at the label dose. Avoid scented cleaners containing essential oils such as tea tree or eucalyptus, which vets flag as hazardous to pets.

Can you use a steam mop on muddy paw prints?

On sealed tiles, once the mud is dry and lifted with a microfibre pad. On timber, laminate and hybrid, many flooring makers advise against steam, so a barely damp microfibre pad is the safer choice.

How do you get mud out of grout?

Let it dry, brush along the grout lines with a soft brush, then wipe with a damp pad. For stubborn marks, scrub gently with a paste of bicarb soda and water, then rinse.
