How to Clean Under a High Chair

Mealtimes with a baby or toddler end with food on the tray, the seat and the floor. Here's how to clean under a high chair quickly, and how to make tomorrow's clean-up smaller.

What's the fastest order?

  1. Take the tray off and put it in the sink or dishwasher, if it's dishwasher safe.
  2. Pick up the big bits from the floor before they get stepped on.
  3. Wipe the chair down while the food is still soft: seat, straps, footrest and the gaps around the seat.
  4. Mop under the chair, including around the legs. No need to sweep first: a wide flat microfibre mop picks up crumbs as it goes.
  5. Dry the floor so no one slips.

Doing the chair before the floor means crumbs you knock down get picked up in the same pass.

What about dried-on food?

Lay a damp cloth over it for a minute to soften it, then wipe. Porridge and banana come off easily once they've had a moment to soak. Don't scrape at a timber or laminate floor with anything hard.

How do you make the daily clean-up smaller?

  • Put a washable mat under the chair. It catches most of what's dropped, and it goes in the wash.
  • Use a smaller bowl and fewer pieces at a time. Less food on the tray means less food on the floor.
  • Keep a cloth within reach so the wipe-down happens straight after the meal.
  • Move the chair off the rug, onto a hard floor you can wipe.
  • Sweep under the table after dinner so the crumbs don't get walked through the house.

What about the straps and harness?

Check the manufacturer's instructions. Many harnesses can be removed and washed, and food gets into them more than you'd think.

Which cleaner on the floor?

Use one that suits the floor and the amount on the label. Keep the pad barely damp on timber, laminate and hybrid, rinse if the label says to, and let the floor dry before the next person walks on it.

A mop you can grab mid-meal

The Cleanmatic 8-in-1 flat mop and bucket set is built for quick jobs: the squeegee edge clears a spill, the wipe holder takes a cloth or floor wipe, and the bucket folds flat so it can live somewhere you'll actually reach for it.

Frequently asked questions

What's the best mat to put under a high chair?

A wipeable or machine-washable splat mat that's bigger than the chair's footprint, because food lands well beyond the tray. Shake it outside after meals and wash it weekly.

How do you clean a high chair tray?

Warm soapy water after every meal, or the dishwasher if the maker says it's safe. Dry it before clipping it back on, and check the edges and clips, where food collects.

What cleaner is safe to use on the floor around babies?

A mild, pH-neutral floor cleaner at the label dose, or plain warm water for everyday wipes. Rinse if the label says to, and let the floor dry before little hands and knees are back on it.
