Puppies, older dogs and unsettled cats all have accidents. On a hard floor, the sooner you deal with it the less chance of a mark or a lingering smell. Here's how to clean up a pet accident on a hard floor.

What should you do straight away?

  1. Blot, don't rub. Press paper towel or a cloth onto the spot to lift as much liquid as you can. Rubbing spreads it.
  2. Keep going until the towel comes up dry.
  3. Check the joins. On timber and laminate, liquid runs into the gaps between boards, so blot along them too.
  4. Wipe the area with a cloth dampened with a cleaner that suits your floor.
  5. Dry the spot completely.

What lifts the smell?

An enzyme cleaner made for pet messes. These break down the compounds in urine that cause the smell, which ordinary detergent leaves behind. Follow the product's instructions, including how long to leave it on. If a faint smell stays, a second application usually does more than scrubbing harder.

Bicarb soda sprinkled on a dry spot and vacuumed up later can help with a lingering smell on tiles.

What should you avoid?

  • Regular vinegar washes on timber. Vinegar can break down a timber floor's finish over time.
  • Bleach or peroxide straight onto the floor. They can lighten or discolour the surface. If you use anything strong, test it somewhere hidden first.
  • Mixing products. Never combine bleach with ammonia-based or acidic cleaners.
  • Flooding the area with water. On timber and laminate, standing water does more damage than the accident did.

What if the mark stays?

A dark patch or a smell that keeps coming back can mean the liquid reached the boards or the subfloor. That's a job for a timber floor specialist or your installer, not for stronger chemicals.

Why do accidents keep happening?

If an adult pet that was reliable starts having accidents, it's worth a chat with your vet rather than more cleaning.

Blot, wipe, dry, done

The Cleanmatic 8-in-1 flat mop and bucket set has a squeegee edge for clearing liquid and a wipe holder that takes a disposable floor wipe, so a one-off mess doesn't have to go on your good microfibre pad. The mop wrings itself through double scrapers, and your hands stay on the handle.

Frequently asked questions

Can you use a steam mop on pet urine?

It's best not to. Many flooring makers advise against steam on timber, laminate and hybrid, and an enzyme cleaner does more for the smell than heat does.

Will pet urine damage timber floors?

It can, if it sits or soaks into the joins between boards. Blot it up quickly and dry the spot. A dark mark that stays usually means it has reached the timber, and that's a job for a floor specialist.

Why does my pet keep going in the same spot?

Pets are drawn back to places that still smell of urine, even faintly. Cleaning with an enzyme cleaner removes the smell they can detect, which helps break the habit.
