A weekly cleaning schedule works best when it's simple enough to keep doing. Split the jobs into daily, weekly and monthly tasks, and the house stays on top of itself without a big clean every weekend.

What should you do every day?

  • Wash up or run the dishwasher
  • Wipe kitchen benches and the stovetop
  • Make the beds
  • Deal with spills as they happen
  • Quick sweep of the kitchen if it needs it
  • Take out full bins

What should you do every week?

Day Job
Monday Bathrooms: basin, toilet, shower, then the floor
Tuesday Dust surfaces and shelves
Wednesday Change bed linen and do the towels
Thursday Kitchen: wipe appliances, microwave and cupboard fronts
Friday Mop the hard floors
Weekend Catch-up day, or take it off

Move the days around to suit your week. The point is one or two jobs a day, not everything at once.

What should you do every month?

  • Vacuum or mop under the furniture
  • Dust from the top down: fans, light fittings, high shelves
  • Clean the windows
  • Wipe the skirting boards
  • Clean inside the microwave and oven

What should you do each season?

  • Deep clean the fridge
  • Check smoke alarms
  • Wash curtains or blinds
  • Do a bigger spring clean

How do you make the schedule stick?

  • Keep it visible. Stick it on the fridge or in a shared family calendar.
  • Share the jobs. Give each person in the house one or two jobs.
  • Keep the tools handy. If the mop is hard to get out, mopping gets skipped.
  • Do the small jobs straight away. A spill wiped now doesn't become a sticky patch later.

Make mopping day easier

The Cleanmatic 8-in-1 flat mop and bucket set wrings itself through double scrapers, so rinsing and wringing are quick and your hands stay on the handle. The bucket folds flat, so it's easy to keep somewhere you can reach.

Frequently asked questions

How often should you mop?

Weekly for most rooms, and more often in the kitchen and entry if you have kids or pets. Our guide to how often you should mop has a room-by-room table.

What's the one job worth doing every day?

Wiping spills and the kitchen bench. Each takes a minute now. Left overnight, they turn into sticky marks that take far longer to clean.

What if you miss a day?

Move the job to the catch-up day and carry on. The schedule only works if it's easy to come back to, so skipping a day shouldn't mean starting again.
