How to Mop Laminate Floors

Laminate is water-resistant, not waterproof, and that one fact shapes everything about cleaning it. Here's how to mop laminate floors so they stay clean without swelling at the edges.

Why does laminate need a lighter touch?

Laminate has a hard printed top layer over a fibreboard core. The surface handles wiping, but water that gets into the joins can make the core swell. Laminate makers recommend using very little water and wiping up spills promptly.

How do you mop laminate floors?

  1. No need to sweep first. A wide flat microfibre mop picks up crumbs, dust and hair as you go.
  2. Use the cleaner your floor's maker recommends. Use only the amount the label says.
  3. Wring the mop until it's barely damp. If you can see water trails, it's too wet.
  4. Mop in the direction of the boards. It picks up dirt from the bevelled edges and leaves fewer marks.
  5. Dry any damp patches straight away. Use a dry microfibre pad or cloth.

What should you avoid on laminate?

  • Buckets of sloshing water. Too much water can make the core swell.
  • Steam mops. Heat and moisture can get into the seams. Many laminate makers advise against them, so check your warranty before using one.
  • Wax and polish. Laminate doesn't need them, and they leave a film.
  • Abrasive cleaners and scourers. They can dull the finish.

How do you get rid of streaks on laminate?

Streaks usually mean too much cleaner or too much water. Go over the floor with a clean, barely damp pad, then buff it dry with a dry microfibre pad. Next time, use less cleaner.

How often should you mop laminate?

Dry sweep or vacuum regularly, and damp-mop when the floor looks dull or sticky. That's usually weekly in kitchens and entries and less often elsewhere. Wipe spills as they happen.

A mop built for barely damp

The Cleanmatic 8-in-1 self-wringing flat mop wrings itself. Pull it back through the double scrapers and the microfibre pad comes out damp and ready, and your hands stay on the handle. The flat head lies low to reach under furniture, and the squeegee edge clears spills fast.

Laminate floor FAQs

Can you use a wet mop on laminate floors?

No. Use a damp mop, wrung until it's barely damp. Laminate has a fibreboard core, and water that gets into the joins can make the edges swell.

Can you use vinegar on laminate floors?

Many laminate makers only approve their own cleaner or a pH-neutral one. Check your floor's care guide before using vinegar, and if in doubt, leave it out.

What is the best mop for laminate floors?

A flat microfibre mop you can wring almost dry, with a wide, low head that reaches under furniture. Avoid string mops, which hold too much water, and steam mops.

Can swollen laminate edges be fixed?

Usually not. Once the core has swollen it rarely shrinks back, and badly affected boards may need replacing. The best fix is prevention: barely damp mopping and drying spills straight away.
