How to Clean Hybrid and Vinyl Plank Floors

Hybrid and vinyl plank floors are easy to look after once you know the rules. Here's how to clean hybrid flooring and vinyl planks without dulling the surface or letting water into the joins.
What makes hybrid and vinyl plank flooring different?
These floors have a tough wear layer on top, but the planks click together at the edges. The surface handles spills well. The joins are where trouble starts if too much water sits on the floor, so flooring makers recommend a barely damp mop.
How do you clean hybrid flooring?
- Sweep or vacuum first. Grit wears the surface over time.
- Use a pH-neutral, non-abrasive cleaner. Dilute it as the label says.
- Wring the mop until it's barely damp. No puddles.
- Mop in overlapping strokes. Work towards the door.
- Finish with a dry microfibre pad or cloth. This prevents streaks and leaves the floor ready to walk on.
What should you avoid on hybrid and vinyl floors?
- Wax, polish and "shine" products. They build up a sticky layer over time.
- Dishwashing liquid and general-purpose sprays. These can leave a residue that dulls the floor and attracts dirt.
- Abrasive powders and scourers. They scratch the wear layer.
- Steam mops. Many hybrid flooring makers advise against them.
- Wet mopping. Water can get into the click joints.
Can you use vinegar on hybrid flooring?
Some vinyl flooring makers allow a very dilute vinegar solution as a gentle option, while others only approve their own cleaners. Check your floor's care guide before trying it.
How do you remove scuffs and sticky spots?
Wipe spills as soon as they happen. For a stubborn spot, use a little of your pH-neutral cleaner on a microfibre cloth and rub gently, then wipe with a clean damp cloth and dry it. Felt pads under chair and table legs help prevent new scuffs.
How often should you clean hybrid flooring?
Dry sweep or vacuum a few times a week in busy areas, and damp-mop the kitchen and entry about weekly. Quieter rooms can go longer.
